The Story Behind Padparadscha's Name
Most sapphires get by on a single word: blue, pink, yellow. Padparadscha needed its own name because it refuses to be either of the two colors it sits between.
A lotus, not a color chart
The word comes from the Sanskrit padma raga, "lotus color" — the exact salmon-pink-orange of a lotus blossom at the moment it opens.
Why labs still argue about the cutoff
GIA, GRS, and other major labs each apply slightly different thresholds for how much pink a stone can have before it's "just" a pink sapphire. The honest answer is that padparadscha is defined by consensus among gemologists.
